BABYMETAL - THE OTHER ONE



Era l’ottobre del 2021 quando, con un messaggio alquanto criptico, le Babymetal annunciavano lo hiatus. L’addio di Yuimetal nel 2018 aveva destabilizzato non poco la band e l’album rilasciato poco dopo (Metal Galaxy) è stato un mezzo fallimento, specialmente dal punto di vista musicale.
Adesso siamo nel 2023, e le nostre terribili ragazze sono tornate … e sono ufficialmente di nuove in tre, come ai bei vecchi tempi.
Il 24 marzo 2023 esce ufficialmente il nuovo, attesissimo, album delle Babymetal dal nome “The Other One” … un album composto da 10 canzoni.
Vediamo cosa hanno realizzato per questo nuovo lavoro discografico.

Quando approccio questo genere di artisti, ci tengo sempre a precisare una cosa: tendenzialmente, non sono un grandissimo amante della musica metal … la ascolto qua e là, ma non è il mio genere preferito.
Detto questo, devo dire che quest’album m’è piaciuto moltissimo … sono rimasto stupito dal risultato finale di questo disco, anche perché è probabilmente il loro lavoro meno “metal”.
Capitemi bene, quando premerete play e non vi ritroverete davanti “musichette” pop o cose del genere: quello di quest’album è un tipo di metal preciso e ragionato, che magari sacrifica un po’ di “rumore” e gente che picchia come un pazzo alla batteria in favore di una struttura melodica più pulita e definita … il tutto appoggiandosi sulla magnifica voce di Su-metal (comunque, una delle top 5 cantanti femminili giapponesi).
Ascoltando quest’album si capisce da subito che è un lavoro notevolmente più curato sotto ogni punto di vista, e il paragone con il precedente disco è a dir poco improponibile … si sente che c’è un’idea alla base di tutto e non è fatto tanto per “rilasciare qualcosa”, evidentemente lo hiatus è stato utile per riorganizzarsi e fare le cose con più calma e concentrati.

A partire dalla prima canzone, "Metal Kingdom", quel lungo intro a inizio album ti mette subito nel mood giusto per apprezzare questo lavoro.
Una delle canzoni che mi ha maggiormente sorpreso è “Time Wave”: non mi aspettavo proprio un pezzo dal genere, una specie di mix tra metal e dance piuttosto atipico per loro … però è un ottimo esempio del discorso che facevo sulla precisione e la cura di quest’album.
Stesso discorso potrei farlo per “Metalizm”: è una canzone che, nonostante non sia chissà che cosa a livello musicale, riesce a prenderti con quel ritmo vagamente ipnotico in continuo crescendo.
Anche altre canzoni mi sono piaciute molto da quest’album: da “Monochrome” a “Divine Attack - 神撃 -“, tanto per fare qualche nome.

Elencati tutti questi pregi, c’è comunque qualche difetto qua e là: un paio di canzoni non mi sono piaciute, mettere quella specie di sintetizzatore/auto-tune sulla voce di Su-metal è un crimine da galera, il brano finale “The Legend” è un po’ il classico pezzo lento senza particolari spunti musicali … ma in sostanza, questo lavoro lo giudicherei un buonissimo album di ritorno per le Babymetal.

Adesso c’è il tour mondiale in corso e avremo anche una data italiana: devo dire che quei biglietti comprati qualche mese fa, adesso me li godrò un po’ di più. Ci si vede a Milano, gente!!!
