Era da un po' di tempo che volevo scrivere una rubrica che puntasse l'attenzione sul passato della nostra amata musica “made in Japan”, e finalmente mi sono deciso.
Prima di ogni cosa, va detto che le mie conoscenze in questo campo sono piuttosto recenti e decisamente settoriali... ma devo dire che trovo particolarmente interessante affrontare da “estraneo” musica proveniente da un'altra epoca musicale e potenzialmente anche molto lontano dai miei gusti usuali.
Sicuramente sarà una bella sfida, cercherò di essere all'altezza.
Ho sempre avuto le idee ben chiare sull'argomento con il quale inaugurare questa rubrica “storica”... non sarà la più originale delle idee, ma comunque una tappa obbligatoria.
Quindi, ho il piacere di presentarvi “First Love” di Utada Hikaru... l'album musicale giapponese più venduto della storia.
Ammetto che, nonostante conosca la cantante per la sua immensa fama, questo è il mio primo vero approccio alla musica di Utada Hikaru. Non avevo neanche la minima idea che lei fosse di doppia nazionalità giapponese/americana (visto che è nata negli USA)... ma ascoltando questo suo primo album, è evidentissima sin da subito l'influenza che ha avuto la musica anni 90 del continente a stelle e strisce su di lei.

“First Love” esce il 10 marzo 1999, dunque quest'anno festeggia i suoi 25 anni.
Da questo album sono stati estratti tre singoli: il primo è il “doppio Lato A” dal nome “Automatic / Time Will Tell”, il secondo è “Movin' On Without You” e l'ultimo è proprio la title track di questo album “First Love”.
Parlando di numeri, “First Love” ha venduto nel solo Giappone 8 milioni di copie alle quali si può arrivare a circa 11 milioni di copie aggiungendo le vendite a livello internazionale.
Ascoltare nel 2024 un album del genere è praticamente come salire su una macchina del tempo è tornare ad un epoca unica, estremamente originale e capace di fornire lavori di ottima qualità in ogni genere musicale.
La più grande riflessione che sorge spontanea durante l'ascolto di questo lavoro discografico è: perché il mondo ha smesso di fare musica R&B??? Questo genere musicale che ha caratterizzato tutti gli anni 90 (ed i primi anni 2000) che prende tutti i punti di forza del rap e ci aggiunge una base musicale più strutturata/melodiosa ed è associata molto frequentemente a voci femminili... di fatto, il risultato finale è un qualcosa di molto delicato e piacevole da ascoltare.
Ecco, diciamo che Utada Hikaru con questo lavoro realizza una sorta di “best of”, una raccolta di ispirazioni/stili/influenze che ha avuto la musica R&B del periodo sulla cantante. Come maggiore fonte di ispirazione la stessa Utada cita la cantante Aaliyah (stella del R&B, purtroppo morta fin troppo prematuramente) ed effettivamente, sono andato ad ascoltarla per curiosità, si sente veramente tanto il suo stile dentro i lavoro di Utada Hikaru. Personalmente, a me ricorda molto Mariah Carey (specialmente nel modo di cantare) di metà anni 90 e sotto certi aspetti nelle sue canzoni ci sento molto le TLC.
Ma oltre a questa preponderante anima R&B, all'interno di “First Love” sono presenti diversi pezzi dance, e la cosa mi ha sorpreso non poco... anche perché devo ammettere che mi sono piaciuti (lo dice uno che tendenzialmente odia questo tipo di musica). Utada Hikaru è riuscita a dosare in maniera eccellente la parte dance in questo album, senza forzarla troppo ed inserendoci in qualche modo quel “retrogusto” R&B che rende il tutto veramente appagante.

Diciamo che è decisamente impressionante vedere una ragazza di 16 anni, presentarsi al grande pubblico con un lavoro discografico così solido, deciso e ricco di stile... a lei piace questo tipo di musica, e questo tipo di musica ti propone.

Guardando quest'album canzone per canzone, si può apprezzare praticamente ogni sfumatura che può avere la musica R&B: ci sono i pezzi che puntano sul ritmo, quelli dove è la voce al centro di tutto, quelli contaminati dalla dance, ecc... in pratica, un vero e proprio vademecum del genere.

Come mio solito, faccio una piccola top 3 delle mie canzoni preferite.
“Automatic” è sicuramente la mia preferita, un brano estremamente piacevole da ascoltare: ritmato al punto giusto, voce e melodia delicata... scorre via che è un piacere.
Seconda piazza per “Never Let Go”, forse il pezzo R&B più puro dell'album (per lo meno, per come lo intendo io)... ritmicamente meno variegato me più cadenzato, ma il modo in cui si accoppia con la voce di Hikaru Utada lo rende un pezzo quasi ipnotico.
Infine in terza posizione “Another Chance”, canzone che come sonorità e struttura si avvicina molto al mio brano preferito che ho citato poco fa.
Alla fine è il bello di saper fare alla grande qualcosa: senza stravolgere il prodotto riesci ad ottenere un risultato finale fresco ed originale... e questo discorso si può applicare a un po' tutte le canzoni dell'album.
Quindi, questo lavoro è perfetto? No, non direi... giusto un paio di difetti, uno piccolino e uno decisamente più grande.
Un piccolo difetto l'ho riscontrato proprio nella title track “First Love”: la canzone è bella (in particolare la parte cantata) ma come melodia la trovo un po' troppo standard e poco ispirata... diciamo che ce ne son tante in quel modo.
Problema decisamente più pesante nell'ultimo brano dell'album: Automatic (Johnny Vicious Remix)... senza fare troppi giri di parole, è inascoltabile. Considerando il materiale di partenza (come detto, Automatic è il mio pezzo preferito), vederlo stravolto in quel modo è quasi scioccante... devo dire che ci vuole anche un certo talento a demolire tutti gli aspetti più affascinanti del brano e ridurlo ad un qualcosa scialbo e privo di mordente. Chissà se arriverà mai il giorno in cui un DJ realizzerà un remix degno di esistere??? Secondo me no, è proprio un modo diverso di concepire le cose... la musica lasciatela fare a chi è in grado di farla.
Valutazione finale - VOTO: 92/100
Questo è l'album che ha fatto la storia della musica giapponese, ed è facile capirne il perché. Un lavoro di una qualità altissima, con un'identità ben definita... un sound fresco, originale e particolarmente d'impatto. Composto interamente da bellissime canzoni (fatta eccezione per quel pietoso remix finale), questo disco oltre che essere un inno alla musica R&B può essere anche visto come un piccolo spaccato del mondo e di come si faceva musica 25 anni... quando con una ragazzetta seduta su una poltrona potevi fare la storia.
