The arrival of a sexy, aggressive dance single:
Updating her hurdles as a top diva!

December 5 2010 was the last day of her 10th anniversary year. She stood on Tokyo Dome’s stage for the first time in 3 years. Koda Kumi sent out this message to her 50.000 guests at the end of the show:

I will continue to sing in the future.
I will do so for the sake of a bright future,
And for the sake of everyone’s smiles.
I will continue to shine by everyone’s side forever----.

What is needed for her to ‘continue to shine’ as a singer, as a performer, as an entertainer and as a woman? It seems the answer is included into the first single of her 11th year POP DIVA.

“A lyricist wrote the lyrics for me this time. The lyrics carry the message ‘Lowering your hurdles is a thing for losers. I want to leave behind my mark, even if it’s just the scratch of my fingernails’. That’s the image people have when they see Koda Kumi, but the normal Kuu-chan isn’t that strong (laughs). I think this song pressures me to make Koda Kumi a pop diva: a strong and beautiful woman.”

This song is a dance song with an electro sound with a slice of rock mixed into it. The arrangement and sound proportion are in the style of Western music. But the song also possesses a casual pop-ness and you can’t help but hum ‘pop, pop, pop diva~’ to yourself. This co-existence of artistic quality and popular appeal is part of her essence.

“I think songs which are easy for people to sing at karaoke like suki de x3 and anata dake ga are very important. I feel I have to leave behind songs with melody lines that directly pierce people’s hearts. But at the same time dance songs like POP DIVA, which leave an impact on the listener, are also at the root of Koda Kumi’s music. I chose a dance number because this single directly precedes my next album. So this single might not become a huge success (laughs), but it’s also necessary to me to have songs that raise the hurdles of the artist Koda Kumi.“

In the music video she plays a sexy spy. Entering the deep psyche she steals documents of the enemy. Her violent action scene with the enemy is a must see.

“I wanted to paint the picture of a woman who takes risks and gets what she wants. I hope everyone will watch the action scene which I challenged as my own ‘hurdle’.”

Furthermore, the b-side Black Candy, which she describes as a ‘sexy cool song’, is an edgy dance tune with an alarm ringing in it. The phrase ‘I’ll shine a little longer, until dawn’ is repeated and the sexy feel is really exciting. In contrast to Lollipop’s lyrics about not being fooled by fickle guys, Black Candy’s lyrics are about seducing a late blooming guy with her suggestive attitude. The song is a Western styled pop dance tune and is catchy and edgy.

It’s worth mentioning that her 49th single has two dance numbers and is her first dance single in a while. Also, her 48th single was a ballad single. In other words, she now has ‘pop ballads’ and ‘Western styled dance tunes’. As a result she will probably unite these slow and up-tempo songs beautifully on her next album.”

A great time at the Billboard Live:
Showing her overwhelming presence as a singer

She has faced big hurdles since her debut and has overcome them thanks to her own strength. “In my 10 years I have only tasted happiness for 2 years. But I remember the sense of accomplishment I felt when I finally got successful because I have failed so much in the past. I now know that you need courage to take a step forward.” Her Billboard Live in autumn last year was another big hurdle for her.

“There was a possibility that people who didn’t know anything about me would come see me at the Billboard Live, so I felt I would have to win them over with only my songs. Because of this I wasn’t very confident at first. But I took this step forward because I wanted to show people who had only seen me superficially my inner self by singing love songs. I feel I have grown a lot by having the courage to take this step forward. I now want to continue to challenge new things fearlessly.”

By focussing purely on her songs, this performance let her re-evaluate herself as a vocalist. The DVD will be released on February 9. The first press edition also has a making of. It was directed by the director of ‘ai no uta’ and ‘aishou’ so he’ll show us a dramatic, sexy view.

“In the 8 live DVD’s I have released so far, we have hardly included any rehearsals with my band. But this time it’s a main part. The making of feels like a documentary and will show a serious Kuu-chan. So I hope everyone will enjoy the actual live recording and the making of!”

While being watched by elderly guests at the Billboard Live, she determinedly said ‘I always want to stay on the offense’. In her 11th year she continues to be provoking and shows no signs of stopping.
